Abstract

Background Gerotranscendence Theory provides a framework for understanding the aging process, emphasizing spiritual transformation rather than disengagement. This theory encompasses three dimensions: Cosmic Transcendence, involving a new perception of time and connections to past generations; Self-Transcendence, involving ego integrity and reduced self-centeredness; and Social Transcendence, involving deeper, more meaningful relationships and a release from societal pressures. The aim of this article is to introduce new Guided Autobiography themes related to Gerotranscendence by examining the experiences of older adults at a Guided Autobiography (GAB) workshop conducted in Turkey. Methods In order to answer the question “How do gerotranscendence experiences and turning points connect through autobiographical narratives?", a gerotranscendence themed Guided Autobiography workshop was designed and offered to older people. Participants consisted of 24 older people who voluntarily attended the workshop. The autobiographical writings of the participants were qualitatively analyzed using the Biographical Case Reconstruction method. Results The findings from the GAB workshop reveal that older adults often resonate with the dimensions of gerotranscendence, validating the theory through their personal narratives and experiences. Conclusion This article contributes to the understanding of aging by highlighting the potential of guided autobiographical writing as a tool for fostering self-reflection and connection among older individuals. Three new themes with stimulating questions focused on gerotranscendence experiences were identified. In further studies, these themes would be used as data collection tool or part of Guided Autobiography interventions.
